Year 1 Curriculum

In Year 1, children enjoy a broad and exciting curriculum that helps them learn about the world while building key skills. They explore big questions in history and geography, such as whether pirates were explorers, how toys and transport have changed over time, and what makes Waverton special. Science lessons are very hands-on, where children learn about animals, plants, the seasons, materials, and the human body. In English, they read and write around engaging books like The Night Pirates and Lost and Found, while in maths they build confidence with numbers, shapes, money, time, and simple calculations.

Creativity is encouraged through art, design, music, and drama, with children painting, sculpting, making models, and performing. PE lessons develop fitness, movement, and teamwork, and PSHE helps them think about health, feelings, and their role in the community. RE introduces them to different beliefs and celebrations, while computing teaches them how to use technology safely and creatively.

Overall, the Year 1 curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, nurture imagination, and give children a strong foundation for future learning in a fun and supportive way.
